What these numbers are - and are not
Every figure on this site comes from a published federal or government-sponsored-enterprise source, refreshed automatically. The 30- and 15-year mortgage figures are the Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Market Survey averages. The prime rate, federal funds rate and 10-year Treasury yield come from the Federal Reserve's H.15 release.
Why the benchmark matters
Most borrowers never learn whether the rate they accepted was competitive. Comparing your quote against the published national average tells you quickly whether a lender is in the normal range. A quote materially above the benchmark is worth questioning; a quote below it is worth reading closely for points and fees that buy the rate down.
